Harvest Containers

As blueberry season approaches, it is time to start thinking about harvest containers.  Commercial blueberry growers who are picking fruit for sale have several different options.  One of the morepicture of claimshell type container for picked blueberries popular picking containers is a clamshell (pictured on the right).  Plastic clamshells are available in several sizes.  The berries are placed in the lower part and the top is snapped down over them.  Clamshells are handy because the top protects the berries and they can also be stacked.

Home growers or pick-your-own customerspicture of cardboard flat container for up to six quarts of picked blueberries commonly use larger size containers.  Cardboard flats (pictured on the right) often hold four to six quarts of berries.

Another large container is the plastic bucket with a plastic bag liner inside of it.  picture of plastic bucket with plastic bag liner for picked blueberriesThe berries are placed in the bucket and when full the bag is pulled up over the top of the berries and secured with a twist tie.  This container holds around a gallon of berries.
