Session
Two:
Harvest Containers
As blueberry season
approaches, it is time to start thinking about harvest containers.
Commercial blueberry growers who are picking fruit for sale have several
different options. One of the more
popular picking containers is a clamshell (pictured on the right).
Plastic clamshells are available in several sizes. The berries are
placed in the lower part and the top is snapped down over them.
Clamshells are handy because the top protects the berries and they can
also be stacked.
Another
popular harvest container the pulp cardboard box (on the left) is
also available in several sizes. The berries are placed in the box
and a plastic sheet is placed over the top and secured with a rubber
band.
Home growers or
pick-your-own customers commonly use larger size containers. Cardboard
flats (pictured on the right) often hold four to six quarts of berries. Another
large container is the plastic bucket with a plastic bag liner inside of
it. The berries are placed in the bucket and when full the bag is
pulled up over the top of the berries and secured with a twist
tie. This container holds around a gallon of berries. |
