Session
Four:
When Is A Blueberry Ripe
Blueberry
fruit are born in clusters and not all the fruit ripens at the same
time. A cluster may have ripe fruit, unripe fruit and green
fruit. Blueberries begin to turn color before they are fully
ripe. A fully ripe blueberry is not only blue near the calyx end,
but is also blue near the stem end (pictured below).
A
berry may look ripe, but when you turn it over and the stem end is still
red or green (pictured on left), the berry is certainly not ready to
pick. DO NOT PICK BLUEBERRIES BEFORE THEY ARE COMPLETELY
RIPE. An unripe berry will not ripen up further after
harvest. Also, unripe fruit will be high in acids, low in sugar
and will lack the aromatic blueberry flavor.
